BMX Profile 2011: Chris Doyle

Chris Doyle is a household name when it comes to BMX. After having such a successful year in 2010, I decided to catch up with Chris in this two-part video se…     The Friday Interview – Catching Up With Chris Doyle Interview and photos by Fat. I’ve been a fan of Chris Doyle ever since I was 15 years old watching him at dirt jumping contests at the ABA Grands, so naturally I was stoked to get to go on the DC Roughing It Tour with him last month. Along the trip I collected a handful of photos and plenty of interview ammo for this week’s Friday Interview where I caught up with him about getting engaged, the trails scene in PA, and being with DC for a decade. Enjoy. – Fat Name: Chris Doyle Age: 29 Location: Pittsburgh, PA Sponsors: Kink Bicycles, DC Shoes and Apparel, Action Village, Demolition, Duo Big news on your end…you are engaged. Congrats on that! Tell us about the lucky lady. Yes, it’s true. Denise and I have been together for almost eight years now. She’s awesome, independent, smart, and beautiful. I’ve always known that we were going to get married eventually, but we both wanted to have our time to be selfish with our lives and not have the stress of weddings, children, etc… We’re pretty much unofficially married already, so at this point the wedding will be more of a formality… Should be a great party though! Where will the honeymoon be? I think we’re going to try to go to Rome. I’ve been to so many places all over the world for riding, so we decided on a place that neither one of us have ever been. It doesn’t get any better than this… Twisted invert at TJ Lavin’s backyard spot. You’ve been on DC for ten years now, what’s that ride been like with the company? It’s been incredible, man. DC was my dream sponsor since I was a kid, and then in 2000 it actually happened. They’ve done so much for me and have supported me for well over half of my professional career. Obviously, the styles and trends of the shoes and clothing have changed since way back then, but their professionalism has not. I think this will be a great year for BMX at DC. There will be more road trips, more online coverage, and an overall greater presence in the BMX world. Is it true that in the ten years you’ve been on DC you’ve only been on like two road trips with them? Yeah, aside from random demos and photo shoots here and there, there have only...

Rooftop 2011 Video United BMX

Stoked on this, Rooftop’s first full video part since ‘Living In Exile’ going straight to the internet and by-passing dvd. Pays homage to his first ever vide…     What first got you into riding? Just the kids in the neighborhood, then they all got cars or arrested and that was the end of that. Out of all your video parts, web edits etc, do you have a favourite clip ever? maybe the S rail from my last United edit, or the swingset grind. What’s an average day in the life of Mike Rooftop Escamilla like? Lately my days are different, I’m getting ready to start filming season 2 of Strangers In Danger, which is alot of getting in shape and running around, not really geting to do the things I want to do. When that’s not happening its up early and out riding or skydiving. If you had to choose one spot to ride for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? The P.O.W. house circa 95… Cause that’s where it all started. What’s the best thing about where you currently live? The weather. What’s the worst thing about where you currently live? The traffic. What was the first contest you rode in, and where did you place? It was a dirt jumping contest at a Whittier Narrows race, three jumps over a table top. I did a 360, bar hop and double tire grab, It must have been in like the 7th grade, so I would have been 12 or so. I won it, I think Mike Ocoboc was in it too. What was your bike set up and clothing of choice at the time? I think I had a GT Mach One race bike with a Uni seat, maybe those Powerlite bars with the curved grips hahah… I was a racer, I have no idea what I wore, it was before there was the web and I hadn’t seen many bmx magazines yet. What is your favourite and least favourite BMX related fad? Pedal grinds and peg chinks, I don’t think I have a favourite. If you could be ‘pro’ in any other sport what would it be and why? Snowboarder or surfer cause the places to travel for those sports are insane. Or maybe a kayaker cause I wanna go over an insane waterfall sometime in my life… Do you have any specific rituals or things you do before doing tricks / things you are scared of? Not really, but when I film a trick I have to do the same ritual every take, like if my arm rubbed a bush...
